1957 - Elvis Presley bought his Graceland estate in Whitehaven, Tennessee, near Memphis. He paid 147 thousand dollars for the property, which had belonged to the Graceland Christian Church.

1953 - Tex Ritter performed the theme to High Noon, "Do Not Forsake Me," at the Oscars. It became the first country song to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
