You Versus Yourself: Running Races

This past weekend, I ran the Turkey Trot to benefit the Dallas YMCA. It is a beautiful 8mi run through downtown Dallas and then across the Trinity River and around a park in Oak Cliff and back into downtown Dallas where it ends at Dallas City Hall. It was a clear and cold morning in the 30s and there were everyone from kids and families doing the 5k to folks with puppies doing the pup 5k to people running a long race for their first time.

Here is the thing that I love about running the races, no matter the length, it is always you versus yourself. It is about setting a goal to finish a distance and accomplishing it. The feeling that you have when you finish and overcome something is great, a lot of clarity about things on your mind and a lot of confidence for putting your mind to things in your life. It is great to see people crossing that finish line and proving to them self that regardless of the difficulty, you can conquer something special.

I encourage everyone to run or jog a race. It doesn’t matter if it’s a 5k or a marathon, the challenge to finish something exists for all levels of fitness and realizing that your biggest competition is your own mindset is priceless and opens doors to so many things that you thought that you would never do.
