Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Brandy Clark released her sophomore album, Big Day in a Small Town, on June 10. Produced by Jay Joyce, Brandy’s 11-songs offering—of which she wrote or co-wrote every tune—is the follow-up to her award-winning 2013 debut, 12 Stories.
And much like her debut album, the songs on Big Day in a Small Town play out like a series of short films teeming with all sorts of interesting characters, including the ex-lovers on “You Can Come Over,” a song co-written by Brandy, Jessie Jo Dillon and Mark Narmor.
“I love characters,” says Brandy to Nash Country Daily. “I think for every great story or song there’s a character in it . . . I love to write about characters. I love to surround myself with characters. I just think they’re interesting. Of course, there’s a lot of me in all these songs, but I sometimes can write best and sing best if I think about a character—almost like it’s a movie. And I play the movie out in my mind as I write it.”
