Lainey Wilson made her first appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night (September 24), with the Grammy-winning country star sitting down for an interview as well as performing her current hit single, “Somewhere Over Laredo.” Wilson shared stories about her small hometown of Baskin, Louisiana (population 156 after she moved to Nashville), where she wrote her first song at age nine, which humorously contained lyrics about “tequila and cigarettes and everything else.” She reflected on her upbringing in a close-knit community and early musical experiences, including earning her first $20 singing at a local convenience store opening (which her dad still has framed at home), and performing the National Anthem while on horseback at rodeos. Wilson brought her vibrant style to the show by sporting different outfits for each segment, and her heartfelt performance of “Somewhere Over Laredo” paid homage to its lyrical inspiration, Wizard Of Oz, by transitioning from a black-and-white start to a vibrant, technicolor finish.
