Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman and her family moved from Nashville to South Carolina this summer to help care for her mother Barbara, who has battled Parkinson’s disease for 20 years. They moved into a home they built outside Greenville, South Carolina, on a lake where Schlapman spent much of her childhood, and an hour from her parents’ farmhouse in north Georgia. Despite the emotional difficulty of leaving the only home her daughters have ever known, Schlapman embraces the family’s collective caregiving role. “Not only did I want to get close to family just because I love them so much, now I’m needed,” says Schlapman, while adding. “I need to be here to help my siblings, and my daddy, care for my mama.” She maintains a small place in Nashville while continuing her music career, “because I’m there almost every week,” while also focusing on advocating publicly for Parkinson’s awareness and research through partnerships like AbbVie’s Changing the Tune campaign.
